Additional Planting Considerations
- Plantone and Hollytone are excellent organic fertilizers that can be used at the time of planting.
- Watering a few times with a water soluable fertilizer such as Miracle Gro, or Alaska Fish fertilizer can really benefit a new plant.
- Tree trunk guards may be essential in the first winter to keep rodents and deer from girdling a new tree. Tree trunks must be protected against buck rubs starting in September and October. Leave the guards on until April, then remove and store them. In gereral, Deer repellent sprays such as Ropel, Bobbex, or Treeguard, are very helpful in preventing deer browsing in summer months. In the winter, the only truly safe measure is to fence vulnerable plants with deer netting, fencing, or burlap wraps.
- Windscreen burlap or Wiltpruf spray can help broadleaved evergreens through the winter. Wiltpruf can also reduce water stress after planting.
- Mulching with 2-3" of bark mulch after planting will reduce competition from weeds, water loss, and help condition soil.
